President’s Day at Leigh GC on Wednesday 29th April 2026

Mr Cool takes the trophy at Lovely Leigh

Leigh Golf club provided a great finish to the MDGA Winter Series providing a course complimented by the players for its challenge, superb condition and fantastic greens back by excellent clubhouse hospitality and a friendly welcome.

The players were also challenged by strong winds which grew more powerful during the day which was played as a singles Stableford with separate competitions for professionals and amateurs.

The early pace was set in stunning style by Alliance legend and local PGA professional Craig  ‘Mr Cool Corrigan’ with a four-under-par 40 points.

No other pros could match this with Phil Archer (Poulton Park) and Jamie Howarth (Davenport) both five adrift, Alex Pritchard (Poulton Park) 34 and Ryan O’neill and Anthony Sproston, both 33 were also in the prizes.

The Amateur winner, Andy Hannay (Rochdale) came closest to challenging Craig for the President’s Trophy posting 39 to lead the Amateur section from Steve Moores (Saddleworth) 38, Paul Donelan (Regent Park) 37, Betty Fan (Bolton Old Links) 36 and Alan Hehir and Ian Stewart – both Leigh and both 33.

The nearest the pin prize was won by Alan Crompton (Wigan)

The day was smoothly run by President Ian and the technical skills of Jim Cunliffe and a rare sighting of secretary Ian Hales.

Ian gave deserving thanks to Leigh Golf Club and all of the players for their support during a difficult season of weather since the Winter Series started in September and maintaining the Alliance motto of ‘Friendship Through Golf’ and the season will conclude with a four-ball Team event at Dunham Forest GC.
