Magnificent Mottram beats the weather and sets up some great scores

The final competition of the very successful first half of the MDGA Winter Series again beat the odds of some very wintry weather closing many courses thanks to the superb condition of Mottram Hall.
The course was declared fit for play late the previous day and provided an excellent stage producing plenty of top scores in all sections.
The later starters probably had an advantage as the course thawed out during the day after a very heavy overnight frost.
Bramll Park’s Mike Bedford put down an early marker with a fine haul of 39 points in the individual pro section and it was only bettered late in the day by Ian Ridgway (Disley) with 41 then a killer blow by fellow Disley pro Josh Crumplin who kept up his recent hot form with another great haul of nine-under-par 45.
Josh had good help from his regular playing partner Chris Jackson (Tytherington) to post 49 in the pro am section, six clear of Ian Ridgway and Gary Spencer (Disley) who edged out Haigh Hall’s Alan Crompton and John Egan on a cpo.
It was closer in the Am Am section with Prestbury brothers Elliot and Tom Kirton posting 44 to finish ahead of Mellor legend Chris Lee and his club colleague Tony Woodford 42 with Richard Margrave (Stamford) and Paul Tryanor (Saddleworth) in third on 40 edging out Charles Herbert (Alderley Edge) & Ross Birch (Reddish Vale) on a cpo.
The winner of the Nearest the Pin prize was Mike Jones (Davenport).
Alliance President Ian Brooks gave well deserved thanks to all of the players for putting in great efforts in testing conditions, the Mottram green staff for their excellent course preparation and all at Mottram Hall for providing an excellent recovery facility with fine service and to sponsor Billy Newsome of Hayvern Electrical and Dunscar GC for his company’s support.
His final thanks went to his colleague Jim Cunliffe for his great work in running the competition and to Alliance Captain Grant Hamerton, professional at Pike Fold GC, for only having one competition cancellation in the first half of the Winter Series.
The MDGA now takes a break until February 19 when Hart Common GC will host the first competition in the second half of the Winter Series.
