Mellor’s magic duo shine at Marple
The Manchester and District Golf Alliance opened its new Winter series at Marple Golf Club.
Marple provided a golf course praised by all of the players. Staff and members offered excellent hospitality and support on and off the course. There was plenty of camerarderie as old friends met up after the golf to demonstrate the MDGA Motto of ‘Friendship through Golf’.
It was also the first competition for new MDGA Captain Andy Palmer (Chorley professional) and he was presented with his Captain’s badge by MDGA President Ian Brooks (Bolton Old Links).
The competition was given a flying start in the Individual Professional and Pro Am sections by Ryan O,’Neill and his Stamford partner Mike Grainger.
Ryan posted 39 to set the standard for the individual pro section and it lasted all day with the only challenge coming from Dave Smith 37 and Sam Shaw (New Mills) and Rob Braithwaite, both 35.
Ryan also had good help from partner Mike to lead in the Pro Am section on 43 and complete the double from Dave Smith and Mike Lynch (Chorlton) 42 and Grant Hamerton and Steve Horner (both Pike Fold) 41.
The Am Am section also had an early bench mark set by Charles Herbert (Haigh Hall) and Neil McGuinness (Disley) with 42.J
ack Wiggins (Chorley) and Joe Donnelly (Harwood) were next in on 41 before a late pair took over the lead with 43.I t was former MDGA Captain Chris Lee (Mellor) and his wife Jackie (Marple), who carried him round for most of the day, who were delighted to claim top spot.
