Strong winds lower the scores at Ashton

Aston-on-Mersey Golf Club provided a well-prepared and challenging course with slick greens which were backed by wall-to-wall sunshine but strong gusty winds played a big part to see very few high scores returned to their lovely clubhouse with excellent hospitality.

Deserved praise goes to AoM Professional Kris Andrews and Alliance officials Ian Brooks and Jim Cunliffe for their superb logistical skills in ensuring a smooth day on a 9-hole course.

There was only one score over 40 returned on the day- which could be an Alliance record and it came in the Pro Am section from former AoM professional Ollie Smith and his home club partner Luke Wood who posted a superb 45 with Luke adding an incredible 13 points to his partner’s 32 and also won the nearest the pin prize.

Ollie was still second in the Individual Pro section, three behind Craig Corrigan and one ahead of Jamie Howarth (Davenport).

In the Pro Am section another home pair Gabe Bagshaw and Daniel Leigh finished second with 39 and third spot was shared by Craig Corrigan and Phil Cooney (Houghwood), Scott Howarth (Davenport) and Mike Lamb (Bramhall) and Andy Palmer (Chorley) and Andy Hannay (Rochdale), all on 38.

Top of the Am Am section were Flixton’s Paul Thornley and Tony Johnson 39, ahead of Dave Smith (Hart Common) and Danny Beeley (Westhoughton) 38 and Dave Wakerley (Ellesmere) and Colin Donelan (Duxbury Park) winning a card play off from Bob Barrow (Davyhulme Park) and John Barrow (Flixton) and Graham Frees and Mike Turner (Regent Park) all 38.
