Hazel Grove GC were proud winners of the England Golf Award as ‘Club of the Year’ a couple of years ago and they were again excellent hosts both and an off the course for the latest MDGA Winter Series Competition.
With the PGA holding the Manchester Open on the same day (in which the MDGA OoM leader Jamie Howarth finished well) there was an obvious reduction in the usual professional entry but it was still another tight and tense competition until the final match was completed.
The dire weather forecast was not realised until the on-course action had virtually finished
Dukinfield professional Dave Green (pictured) is in good form and he set the early pace with an individual haul of 40 and combined with Josh Corrigan (Ashton-on-Mersey) for 44 in the Pro Am section.
Returning to MDGA action after recent success on the Professional Legends Tour was Poulton Park’s Phil Archer – a true MDGA legend!
Phil posted 40 to share top spot in the individual pro section with Dave Green, four more than Poulton Par’s Alex Pritchard, and teamed up with Leigh’s Mark Pasquill to amass 45 and overtake Dave and Josh to top spot in the Pro Am section who finished one ahead of Alliance Captain Grant Hamerton and his Pike Fold colleague John L Dobbins.
There were runaway leaders in the Am Am section in Richard Blackwell (Davenport) and Steve Austin (Alder Root) with a huge haul of 48.
It left them five clear of Leigh’s dynamic duo of Ryan Taylor and Chris Flynn, who won a cpo from Stamford’s Mike Leigh and Carlton Weldon.
Bobby Heron Pike Fold) completed the honour’s list winning the Nearest the Pin prize.
