Denton in cruise control at magnificent Manchester

THE MDGA Seniors Matchplay competition is the most recent in the 100-year history of the Alliance.

It was started just ten years ago and has become one of the biggest of its kind in the great programme of Inter Club KO matches staged during the summer months..

Manchester Golf Club is one of the finest clubs in the region with a superb course and clubhouse giving excellent support and hospitality since it offered to become the final venue at the outset of the competition.

Manchester GC hosting the final has been a great incentive for the participating teams to get the chance to play at a top venue and once more it provided a superb stage for the final between Denton and Westhoughton.

Thanks to the skills of Alliance President Ian ‘Sunny’ Brooks the weather was also excellent.

Denton Captain Jim Cox and Team Captain Steve Bracken set a great example and got their team off to a flying start beating Gary Atherton and Keith Davies by two up.

Westhoughton showed their competitive desire as Paul Barlow and Robert Gough overcame Dave Garner and Lez Bray 3/2 to draw level.

But that was their last success as comfortable wins for Steve Jenkinson and Kevin Brearley three up against Robert Entwistle and Michael Doyle, Dave Urmston and the legendary Steve O’Shaughnessy 4/3 over Jeff Beardsworth and Ernie Price and also 4/3 for Gaz Yates and Steve Armstrong over Ian and David Simm took Denton to a comfortable 4-1 victory.

Ian Brooks gave well deserved praise to both teams for their efforts on the day in showing the Alliance motto ‘Friendship Through Golf’ off to a top level and doing their clubs proud by reaching the final.

He also praised Manchester GC for once more hosting the final in exemplary style both on and off the course.
