Donald’s ‘Clan’ present his legacy to Sale

Donald McDonald is a true legend at Sale Golf Club and in Cheshire and Greater Manchester golf.

Donald joined Sale GC in 1964 and received recognition for the great work he put into golf by becoming Captain in 1980 and President in 1997.

During the above period he was also honoured to be Captain and later President of the Manchester & District Past Captains.

Donald worked hard to encourage all the golf clubs in the Greater Manchester Area to support their Junior Golf Sections and persuaded some to introduce a junior section and support it by appointing a recognised position of Junior Organiser.

Needless to say he was really successful in his ambitions and many young boys and girls have benefitted over the years, not only with their golf but in life generally, to become respected and admired in whatever careers they have pursued.

Donald passed away in 2022 and now his family – the McDonald ‘Clan’ have recognised his fantastic time in golf by presenting the club with a new Commemorative Silver Salver to be awarded to the junior winner at the club each year plus a designated honours board, to be displayed in the clubhouse recording the names of the junior captains and winners of the Silver Salver- a first for the club.

They also donated £500 to support the junior section.

The presentation was made to the club before the AGM and the membership warmly welcomed the McDonald ‘Clan’ with Jim McDonald presenting the Salver, Honours board and the cheque for £500 to Sale Junior Organiser Mike Hobson.

Sale Chairman David Moore thanked the ‘Clan’ for attending the presentation and remarked what a fitting event it was to celebrate a revered Past Captain and Past President, who was a true gentleman.
