Will enjoys a busy start in his new role at Withington
WILL Powell (pictured) has enjoyed a busy start since his appointment as Commercial Manager at Withington Golf Club last Autumn.
A lot of his role at the club is featured in the hospitality sector, and Will his using his vast experience in this field to develop and tweak certain areas.
Will said: “I was a golfer in my younger years at Sickleholme Golf Club in Bamford, Hope Valley. However I have not been able to play for quite a few years now- something I hope to change when time allows!
I have spent the last 15 years working in the luxury hotel sector, the majority of which at 4 red star level.
I’ve worked in some of the best hotels in the country, initially as Restaurant Manager and Food and Beverage manager, progressing through to Operations Management before securing my first GM job at Ruthin Castle.
Since then I’ve done some interim work for Macdonald Hotels, including the flagship 5 star Randolph in Oxford
During this time I have been responsible for running many prestigious events, including celebrity weddings.
Since my arrival at Withington last October we have changed an office into a spike bar, enabling us (when rules allow) to serve golfers directly onto our revamped patio/terrace area.
The patio has been tidied up with new seating, café barriers and planters and also a large retractable awning giving our members a more pleasant area to enjoy an alfresco bite to eat or post-round drink.
We have also acquired the professional shop business from Steve Marr, who is still very much involved with the club, but focussing his efforts on teaching and playing more.
This has enabled us to roll out our golf management software across the whole club giving members the benefit of using their membership cards for purchases club-wide.
Further plans include attracting more functions to the club utilising our fantastic 100 seat function room with its fantastic views over the Mersey basin and indeed our notorious final three holes known as ‘the stretch’, as well as raising the funds to refurbish our entrance and bar area, and the addition of some modern toilet facilities in the clubhouse lounge.
We have also employed a new chef in Nick Dee, who has come from a professional chef background.
I would like to thank all of the membership for welcoming me so warmly (not a surprise though given as Withington’s reputation as a very friendly club).
